San Isidro de General

San Isidro de General

Nestled midway between the capital San Jose and Dominical in Perez Zeledon Canton is the charming city of San Isidro de General.

Before major improvements to the Pacific coastal highway, most people reached the South Pacific Coast by crossing the Talamanca Mountains on the Inter American Highway. Today, the Costanera Sur Highway (Route 34) along the coast is in great shape and visitors pass through San Isidro is mostly for the nearby parks, especially Cerro Chirripó National Park – home of Costa Rica’s highest mountain.

It’s not a tourist town per se, but many ex-pats have settled there. The cool climate, welcoming locals, and verdant surroundings have made it a popular retirement option over the years.

When visiting – or just passing through – don’t miss the local farmer’s market on Thursdays and Fridays. The Feria is the largest in the southern zone and features up to two hundred merchants on good days. You’ll find just about every exotic Costa Rican fruit and vegetable, as well as local cheeses, meats, and seafood. It’s a great opportunity to experience the vibrant colors and culture unique to the country.
